History of the University

For over a century, music has been one of the most highly respected programs at WT. Our graduates are in leadership, high-profile teaching, and business positions statewide, nationally, and worldwide. WT has produced international opera stars, concert artists, renowned composers, major recording artists, business leaders, and successful entrepreneurs. This is remarkable for an institution nestled within the high plains of rural West Texas!

Over the last seven decades, there have been only two Directors of Bands at WT, Dr. Gary Garner (1963-2002) and Don Lefevre (1987-present)–resulting in a national reputation through past performances at the College Band Directors National Association, Carnegie Hall, and 15 appearances at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention.

Throughout the decades, the standard of performance has continued to rise and build upon the legacy established and cultivated by former directors and students. This legacy is one that goes hand-and-hand with the growth and success of our university. WT is unsurpassed as a student-centered and music-oriented university of the 21st Century, and is proud to serve the Texas Panhandle and the state of Texas.
