Dr. James Barger | Associate Professor of Saxophone
During my career, I have been fortunate to teach saxophone to some truly remarkable musicians. Dr. James Barger is one of those individuals who make the long hours of teaching worthwhile.
Dr. Barger joined the West Texas A&M University School of Music as Assistant Professor of Saxophone in 2016. He earned his B.M. in Music Performance and Composition and his M.M. in Music Performance from West Texas A&M University in 2010 and 2012, followed by a D.M.A. in Music Performance from Texas Tech University in 2016.
James was an outstanding student during his time at WTAMU and Texas Tech University, where he studied with Dr. David Dees—an exceptional musician and teacher. When it came time for me to step away from teaching saxophone, it was a joy for both me and the woodwind faculty to welcome Dr. Barger back to WTAMU.
Today, Dr. Barger is recognized as one of the most dynamic and inspiring voices in the saxophone world. At WTAMU, he teaches applied lessons to all saxophone majors, conducts the WTAMU Jazz Band II and Saxophone Ensemble, teaches a course in music technology, and leads weekly studio classes. He also serves as faculty sponsor for the WTAMU Pep Band, affectionately known as The Band in The Box, and chairs the woodwind division.
His students often say that he accomplishes more in a day than most do in a week—and that he does everything possible to ensure their success. His results speak for themselves: Dr. Barger’s students have won the MTNA Young Artist Performance Competition for the state of Texas in consecutive years. Dillon Martin was the 2024 winner, and just last month, Joseph Fondren earned the 2025 title. Joseph will represent Texas in the South-Central Division round later this year.
It is a thrill to witness the collaboration between Dr. James Barger and his students. Their shared dedication and artistry are truly inspiring.
Sincerely,
