WT Band Alumni Open Board Positions
Dear Fellow WT Band Alumni,
I hope that this message finds you having had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We certainly have many things for which to be grateful as we head into the holiday season and are very excited about the Symphonic Band’s March performance at Carnegie Hall.
We are looking to fill three important alumni board positions, and I am reaching out with the hope of generating interest. The WT Band Alumni board meets via Zoom every four to six weeks. Our primary purposes include gathering former WT band member contact information in order to promote fellowship and communication among our alumni, promoting all of the great things currently happening in the WT band program and among alumni, and running annual or biannual campaigns to raise awareness and promote scholarship donation support for members and prospective members of the WT band.
A description of each position and its duties follows. If you are interested and/or have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at jshaw322@gmail.com. Although the term for each office ends in August, there would be the possibility that our new board members could continue their service with a second term, beginning in August of 2025.
Website & Social Media Coordinators (1 year term - this partial term will end August 2025)
The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for developing strategies and producing content related to the WT Band Alumni Website and Facebook and Instagram accounts. They assist with monitoring, moderating, and responding to member comments; manage social media partnerships with other organizations, help to generate and solicit content for social media platforms and the website, and create and/or post shareable videos and images. Ideally, there are two members serving in this capacity: one on-site at WTAMU (a current band member, graduate assistant, etc.) who provides content related to things happening on campus and in the music department right now and another who provides mainly alumni-related content. We are needing to fill both positions.
1970’s Decade Chair (2 year term - this partial term will end in August 2025)
The primary role of each decade chair is to gather member information and encourage alumni to register for the website. The decades chairs also serve as the primary source of communication to the WT Band Alumni members within their decade.
Decade chairs may also facilitate fellowship activities for their fellow decade members, but this is not a requirement of the office. This office works closely with the Membership Coordinator, Event Coordinator, and Development Coordinator when small or large scale band alumni events are planned, during scholarship donation campaigns, etc.
A decade chair is asked to spend time each month using social media, information gathered from fellow alumni, etc., to seek out members of their decade who have not yet signed up for the website and encourage them to do so. Decades chairs provide updates on this activity at each board meeting.
Although this sounds like a big commitment, the main duty is to promote new members to join the website, and one can devote as much or little time as they are able depending on their schedule. We realize that this is a volunteer position. We do ask for a commitment of the equivalent of an hour or two per week with the understanding that sometimes this just may not be possible.
Again, if interested in either position, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your time, and Go Buffs!
Jim Shaw
