WTAMU Recognizes and Awards Dr. Russ Teweleit
Outstanding Contributions in Professional Service
Russ Teweleit
In 2023, the epitome of selfless dedication and service with a smile undoubtedly belongs to Dr. Russ Teweleit. As supervisor of student teachers Russ is in the field and interacting with public school directors more than any other faculty member. Engaging extensively with public school directors, Russ's role extends beyond supervision; he serves as a tireless ambassador, actively recruiting prospective students for the School of Music and the University at large.
There are numerous trainings that go into the supervisory role for student teachers. In 2023 there were no fewer that 60 hours of training that completed outside of his 9-month contract. Throughout the summer months, Russ provided continuous support to Music Education graduates, assisting them in job placements after completing their student teaching.
Documenting his service from May to July of 2023, Russ consistently contributed 5-7 hours per week, ensuring the success of recent graduates. Collaborating closely with directors across various school districts, Russ provided invaluable suggestions for improving teaching methods and program effectiveness in instrumental pedagogy. This included consulting, teacher evaluation, and written program assessments in districts such as Amarillo, Canyon, College Station, Ector County (Odessa), Floresville, Fort Worth, Mesquite, Midland, and Tyler. Russ serves as the Assistant Camp Director of the WTAMU Band and Orchestra Camp, actively participated in university, college, and departmental committees, and served as the faculty sponsor for Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.
Additionally, he offers a Band Director’s Workshop in partnership with Band Director’s Talk Shop, providing continuing education for visiting directors during the Band and Orchestra Camp. Russ's leadership extended to his roles as the Region I College Division Chair for TMEA and his contributions to the Greater Southwest Music Festival Committee. He recently introduced a Middle School Clinic-Day, advancing music education opportunities for area middle schools and leaving a lasting impact on the region.
