CANYON, Texas — A trio of bands will close out the fall semester with an evening of music at West Texas A&M University.
The University, Concert and Symphonic Bands will perform beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 4 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus. Admission is free, and the concert will be livestreamed on the WT School of Music’s Facebook page.
“Fresh off a wildly successful marching season, the students have put together fast paced and challenging program full of a wide variety of works for band,” said Russ Teweleit, professor of music education and director of the University and Concert bands.
“The WT Symphonic Band is one of the premiere university ensembles in the nation and is currently preparing for a concert in New York City’s Carnegie Hall on March 13,” said Don Lefevre, director and associate professor of music. “We are fortunate to have the talented musicians that we have at WT in all of our ensembles and are extremely proud of the work that they do in preparation of each and every concert.”
The University Band will perform “Sòlas Ané” by Samuel Hazo, “Silent Night in Gotham” by Julie Giroux and two interconnected pieces, “Fairest of the Fair” by John Phillip Sousa and “Fantasy on a Theme” by Andrew Boysen Jr.
The Concert Band will perform “Pegasus” by John Wesley Gibson; “Chester” by William Schuman; “Only Light” by Aaron Perrine, winner of the 2015 Ostwald Composition Prize; music from the anime film “Princess Mononoke” by Joe Hisaishi; and “Minor Alterations: Christmas Through the Looking Glass” by David Lovrien.
The Symphonic Band will perform “First Light” by David Maslanka, “When Jesus Wept” by William Schuman, “Dancing Fire” by Kevin Day, “March Intercollegiate” by Charles E. Ives, “Love and Light” by Brian Balmages, “Moth” by Viet Cuong and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.
Rosters of each band are below.
Fostering an appreciation of the arts is a key component of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign’s new goal is to reach $175 million by 2025; currently, it has raised more than $160 million.
